P.G.Department of Music Vocal
About P.G.Department of Music Vocal
General Shivdev Singh Diwan Gurbachan Singh Khalsa College Patiala was established in 1960 with a vision to serve the society in a unique manner. Music as a subject (Vocal and Instrument) was introduced in the year 1994. Since then the Department of Music Vocal is doing all out efforts to excel not only in the field of Indian Classical Music but also in the other forms of Indian Music i.e. Light, Devotional and Folk Music and as well as Western Music. The department of vocal music is truly an unmatched, unparalleled, remarkable and outstanding component of this prestigious institution. The experience of learning for the students in the department is truly very unique as they pursue their academic carrier with music as a subject on one hand and they learn classical vocal music on the other. Through this way the students get benefited from both the experiences; studying in a regular manner; acquiring knowledge through the modern teaching aids and learning a subject like music vocal through the traditional way of learning i.e. "Guru-Shishye Parampara".
The department has shown a remarkable progress since it came into existence; it’s with the blessings of almighty, that the management has started Master of Arts (Hindustani Classical Music) from session 2014-2015.
The P.G. Department of Music Vocal, Khalsa College Patiala has set up a studio named on the first musician of sikh tradition BHAI MARDANA SANGEET STUDIO in the college premises. This studio was inaugurated by Respected Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar Ji (Pardhan Shiromini Gurudwara Parbhandak Committee) on 27th May, 2017. This initiative taken by the managment is going to be a milestone for students and will be very helpful for a better and practical understanding of Music. Also, students can now be trained in a more vocational manner and this will raise the bar of the already excellent Department of Music Vocal. Under the keen supervision of our worthy Principal and with his ever encouraging support, the faculty is committed to use this facility. The studio will be a great initiative to restore the forgotten legacy of Sikh Traditional and Cultural values by recording the forgotten Vaars, Kawishris, Devotional songs and Shabad Kirtan.
The department has well-furnished two vocal rooms with modern facilities like wifi internet, modern musical electronic gadgets etc. Apart from the main library the department has its own library. The reading and lending section of the main library has numerous books of music. Some books out of these are rare and priceless which provide the valuable material for regular as well as research oriented study. Also the department has its own stage which provides the students an opportunity to gain stage confidence by doing rehearsal on it.
Presently 33 students are pursuing their carrier in Indian Classical Music Vocal and the Department is working and progressing under the supervision of Dr.Jagjit Singh (01-07-2009 to till the date) and the able guidance of Principal Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha.
Thus the department provides a platform to students at under graduate level to understand music and gives the post graduate students an opportunity to learn Indian Classical Music with specialization in composition, stage performance, musicology and music technology.
