About PG Department of Economics
The Department of Economics is one of the oldest Departments of the college, established in 1960, under the Faculty of Social Sciences. The department is serving a wide array of courses that include M.A. Economics, B.A. and B.A Honors with Economics. Along with this, the department faculty is determined to teach the principles of Economics to the students of other allied departments such as Department of Commerce and Management, P.G Department of Agriculture, Department of Automobile Industry and Department of Home Science. The department is committed to provide a dynamic learning environment that stimulates the minds of the learners intellectually, professionally and personally. The major strength of the department is the team of its dedicated faculty of 5 members out of which 4 are Ph.D. The Department mentors its student through various guest lectures of eminent economist, scientists and personalities, conducting quiz competition, documentaries and advises on career progression. Besides taking regular classes, the faculty also put extra efforts for preparing the students for NCC, youth festival, Khalsai games, and UGC NET/Competitive Exams. The department also host students and parent teacher meeting once in every semester for giving feedback of students to their parents and discuss their queries on monthy basis.
Objectives
- To prepare students for different public and private jobs such as SSC, Indian Economic Services, UPSC, PCS, Banks, FCI, CRRID, MNCs, Railway Recruitment Board, CDS, Teaching, and Business etc.
- To boost the Student’s ability to apply micro and macro-economic principles and models to define and address market failures with the help of statistical tools for the better formulation of policies and planning.
- To stimulates the minds of the learners to identify the principles of prosperity, growth and economic change over time and explain the mechanism through which these variables operate in the economy.
- To provide the knowledge of current national and international economic issues so that they will be able to identify, correlate the national and international economic changes and monetary development through their knowledge of trade and monetary models.
- To make students able to forecast the future course of changes and development through their knowledge of institutional and structural changes under various sectors of growth.

Economics is considered as evergreen subject due to its high utility and huge demand in the job markets. The course produce highly qualified, well rounded and motivated students with a sound knowledge of the subject and its applicability in real world to serve the society and the nation. It also trains the students in the methods and ideas of economics that pushes forward the frontier of knowledge in the respective field. Graduation in Economics paves way to different public and private jobs such as SSC, Indian Economic Services, UPSC, Banks, FCI, CRID, MNCs, Teaching, Business Journals, Newspapers and research institutions.

The Department of Economics was organised a Poster Making Competition on 27.1.2017 on the theme of “Voting Rights and responsibility”. Total 32 students participated in the activity from B.A. I, II & III. The students made interesting posters on voting rights such as your vote matters, your vote is your voice, voting is your duty not just a right and unity, etc. Prof. Jiwat Kaur (Department of History) and Prof. Manveer Kaur (Department of Fine Arts) gave judgements and awarded the students with 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions were on first, second and third positions respectively. ABOUT THE ACTIVITY
With the motive of “Learning by doing” the awareness and consciousness regarding logos of Banks, companies and currencies was amplified among the students on 17-8-2018. The students took part in the activity with enthusiasm as they find it interesting. Total 30 students of under-graduate and post–graduation are participated in the event. ABOUT THE ACTIVITY
On 1 February 2019, Interim Union Budget was shown to the students. The budget was presented by acting Finance Minister Piyush Goyal in parliament. During the budget speech Mr. Piyush Goyal highlighted the various issues such as income tax relaxation, standard tax reductions for salary persons, TDS, MSMEs, Mega Pension Scheme and MSP. During the activity 32 students M.A Ist, B.A I, II and III (Economics) were present. After the budget speech, the group discussion was carried on.

The Post Graduate Department of Economics screened an educational documentary to the students on the occasion of International Social Justice Day dated 20 Feb. 2019. The film deals with the laws passed by Pakistan assembly after growing rates of acid attacks on women. The documentary also inspires and gives hope to such women who are the victims of acid attacks and give them a new horizon to live life fully. Principal, Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha address the students and tell them that women are empowering in every field and their scope is not limited to the domestic wall only but has also been able to achieve high standards at national and international level. Further, Dr. Nishan Singh, Head of the Department give vote of thanks to all. He further said that the department will be continue to conduct such activities so that the knowledge of the students can be enhanced and they can benefit from these activities from time to time and their thinking can be widened. 95 Students were present in the activity.

The Department of Economics attended One Day Workshop on “Agrarian Distress and Public Policy Options” at Punjabi University, Patiala organised by Department of Economics, Punjabi University Patiala on 28 February 2019. In this workshop, various researchers and economists presented their paper on issues related to MSP, Farmer Suicide, Crop Diversification, Credit, Profit and other Problems of agriculture and allied activities. The objective of this activity is to encourage the students, their families and society to pay taxes and the role of efficient tax system in Nation-building. ABOUT THE ACTIVITY
Post Graduate students of the department attended an Income Tax Awareness Rally at the Income Tax Department Office, Leela Bhawan. On this occasion, a lecture on the topic of Income Tax Awareness by the Chief Commissioner of the Income Tax Department, was delivered in which the students were informed about the income tax rules and its benefits and asked them to motivate the tax payers to pay taxes. At the same time students and teachers were gifted with T-shirts and caps. An awareness van was inaugurated by the department with the slogan “Pay Tax and Build India”. The department has organised a quiz competition on “Socio Economic and Political Issues in the present scenario” on 5 November 2019. Various questions related to national and international current issues of politics, economy and burning issues were asked from the students. Priya (MA Economics), Sukhwinder Singh and Sukhdeep Kaur won the quiz competition against 4 teams. Total 15 students participated in the quiz and 37 students from undergraduate classes attended the quiz. It was helpful for students to understand the surroundings and boost their confidence level.

Acknowledging the importance of science and technology in the history of mankind, an
event dedicated to International week of Science (9th -14th November, 2019) was organized by the department on 11th November 2019 at Bhai Gurdas Conference Hall, Science Block of the college. During the event, a documentary film by Gulzar on autobiography of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Ex- President and the great scientist of the century was presented to the students. The objective of this activity was to give inspire the student’s through life of great people in the history and aware them about how they make nation proud irrespective of struggle and social problems they face throughout their success journey. The quiz competition was conducted by the Department of Economics on 16 September 2019. In which the graduate and post graduate students of the department participated. Out of the five teams the winning team BA Part I was honored by the head of the department and other staff members. Sukhdeep Kaur, a student of MA Economics Part II, recited a poem based on the life of Guru Nanak. Dr. Satvinder Kaur enlightened the students in detail about the life and teaching of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the Bani recited by him.

ABOUT THE ACTIVITY
The P.G department of Economics organised a Student Induction cum Fresher Party on 26 August 2019 in Room No. M2, Management Block of college. On the opening of the ceremony, Dr. Nishan Singh (Head, Department of Economics) welcomed all the students in the new session and aware them about college rules and regulations. After that, Dr. Satvinder Kaur spreaded awareness about ill effects of ragging and recommend the students to raise voice against ragging. On this occasion the students performed various activities such as poetry, singing, dancing etc. On the basis of their performance, the students were awarded with the tag of Miss Khalsa and Mr. Khalsa. The title of Miss Khalsa was given to MA Part I student Bharti and Mr. Khalsa to Sukhwinder Singh. During this activity, 14 students were present.

In this activity all the teachers supervised and gave full support. The students decorated the stall and sell eatable in the fest. The total profit of the students was 7045 rupees. The Department of Economics has organized a special lecture for the students on the topic of agricultural awareness through the zoom app (Meeting I.D- 3171957951). In this workshop a total of 88 students of different departments of the college (BA-I, BA-II and BA-III , MA-I and II (Economics), BA Social Science and BSc Agriculture attended the lecture. On this occasion Dr. T.S.Shergill explained various latest methods and techniques of agriculture practices through audio-visual presentation and highlighted the importance of farming as a way of living rather than a business. Principal, Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha appreciated the techniques specifically mentioned by the speaker and motivate the students to aware the farmers about these technologies to boost the farm productivity. The Department of Economics has organized a special lecture for the students on the topic of “Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai” by Karan Razdan (Bollywood Director/Actor/Script Writer/Motivational Speaker) through the zoom app (Meeting I.D- 3171957951). In this workshop a total of 97 students of different departments of the college B.Com 2nd year, BA Social Science 3rd Year, BSC Agriculture 3rd year and Economics department attended the lecture. On this occasion Mr. Karan Razdan explained the importance of having a vision and goal setting to achieve abundance in all areas of life. The speaker told the students about the role of hard work with a positive attitude has always multiplier effect on success. He has also gave the answers of various questions raised by the students and encourage them to read books and meditate daily. In order to welcome the new students and introduce them about the basic rules and regulations of the college campus, Student Induction Program was organised by PG Department of Economics in collaboration with Department of Fine Arts and Department of Religious Studies on 28 September 2021 in Bhai Gurdas conference hall at 10 AM. In this program, college Registrar Dr. Ravinderjit Singh and Deputy Registrar Dr. Jagjit Singh joined as the chief guest. Later on, Dr. Jagjit Singh encouraged the students to participate in various academic and cultural activities held both at college and university level for their all round personality development. During this activity total 103 students participated out of which 86 from under graduate classes ( B.A 1st, 2nd and 3rd year ) of Economics, Fine Arts and Religious studies department and 17 from M.A Ist and M A 2nd year Economics. Lastly, Dr. Gurveer Singh concluded the event by giving vote of thanks to respective chief guests and students. The objective of this activity is to apply the skills of micro economics to earn profit out of business. All the teachers and students of the department of Economics are invited in the activity.
ABOUT THE ACTIVITY
The students of Post Graduate Part I, II and B.A Honours 3rd year of the department participated in the Spring Spree Fest organized by the School of Commerce and Management Department. In this activity all the teachers supervised and gave full support. The students decorated the stall and sell eatable in the fest. The total profit of the students was 5050 rupees. All the students were happy with their first business experience.

To give a warm welcome to the fresher students and to introduce them with rules and regulations of the college, the department is organising a student induction programme/welcome party. The objective of this activity is to introduce the students with the department faculty, their seniors along with the introduction of rules and regulations of the college. ABOUT THE ACTIVITY
In order to welcome the new students and introduce them about the basic rules and regulations of the college campus, Student Induction Program was organised by PG Department of Economics in collaboration with Department of Fine Arts, Department of History and Department of Hindi and other languages on 14 October 2022 in Bhai Gurdas conference hall at 10 AM. In this program, college Vice Principal Dr. Harvinder Kaur joined as the chief guest. Dr. Satvinder Kaur warmly welcome the honourable chief guests and introduce the students with various cells and committees such as anti ragging cell, sexual harassment cell, legal literacy cell etc while introducing about college. Chief guest Dr. Harvinder Kaur formly welcome the new students in the college and provide required information related to rules and regulations of academic curriculum and examination and encouraged the students to participate in various academic and cultural activities held both at college and university level for their all round personality development. During this activity total 139 students participated out of which 118 from under graduate classes ( B.A 1st, 2nd and 3rd year ) and remaining from M.A Ist and M A 2nd year Economics and History . ABOUT THE ACTIVITY
On 1 February 2023, Union Budget was shown to the students through zoom meeting app (Meeting I.D- 3181927599). The budget was presented by acting Finance Minister Nirmala sitharaman in parliament. During the budget speech Mrs. Nirmala sitharaman highlighted the various issues such as growth in per capita income, income tax slabs and new relaxations, agriculture and employment programmes, standard tax reductions for salary persons, TDS, MSMEs, Mega Pension Scheme, Svachya Bharat Abhiyan and MSP etc. During the activity students of M.A Ist, MA IInd and B.A III (Economics) were present. After the budget speech, the group discussion was carried on.
