About Department of Biotechnology

The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2004 and runs a 6 semester full time program leading to award of Bachelor of Sciences (B.Sc.) Honours degree in Biotechnology.

There has never been a most exciting time to study for a degree in biotechnology. Rapid advances in technology and knowledge have an almost daily impact in our lives, from the air we breathe, from the food we eat and from the environment in which we live.

Biotechnology is all around us and there is wealth of opportunities for well qualified graduates to apply their knowledge to solve the problems of the modern world.

The Department of Biotechnology in Khalsa College Patiala has 3 well equipped laboratories for basic and advanced level research. The faculties of the department employ creative and modern ways of teaching so that students learn in friendly and effective manner. The Department regularly organizes conferences, seminars, workshops, and industrial visits to instill academic excellence, personality development, systematic and disciplined work and scientific temper in students to face the challenges in the field of biotechnology. Students are regularly encouraged to update their practical skills with hands on experience in the state-of-art laboratories.

Students who graduate from our programs have many options in careers related to cell biology, microbiology and molecular biology. These include jobs in the agricultural, biotechnology, food and healthcare industries, where a biotechnologist might work in a laboratory carrying out research, process control or quality control. Well trained biotechnologists often work in businesses, industry and government and use their knowledge of biology to advise and apply scientific principles in business plans and policy issues.

Another important area for biotechnologists is in education. A biotechnology degree provides the knowledge base to become an effective teacher, particularly in school and colleges, and qualified science teachers are in higher demand than those trained in non-science areas. Other opportunities exist in training, education and public outreach for business, government and private institutions.
